The task was to design a stackable set of drink holders of contemporary design combining the natural beauty of wood and the machine aesthetic of metal. The solution is a group of four small tables. Each table is comprised of a single block of red Cedar cut in a 1:3 proportion. The two pieces are then separated while maintaining their natural orientation to one another: one piece becomes the base; and the other becomes the top. The 2 pieces are then fixed in space by an extruded aluminum channel. Tung oil is used to accentuate the natural warmth and beauty of the wood which is contrasted by the clean and cool lines of the satin anodized aluminum channel. The table are called Separae, the four together are referred to as a Clan, and when stacked they become a Totem.
